MSc Real Estate alumni Robyn talks about how the course prepares you for a career in the property industry, why Sheffield is a great choice for Real Estate expertise and shares tips for new students.

Why did you choose this course at the ±¬ÁϹ«Éç?

In the Summer before starting the MSc Real Estate course, I undertook some work experience, where I shadowed commercial real estate advisory and development professionals. I found the projects they were working on to be interesting, and I was surprised at the wide range of roles that exist within the industry. Knowing that I wanted to pursue a career in the world of real estate, I began searching for a course that would enable me to gain an in depth understanding of the variety of roles available within the industry.

Looking back, I can certainly say that this masters has given me the in depth introduction to the sector that I was looking for. The course is clearly designed to give you a thorough understanding of valuation, investment valuation, economics, planning, landlord and tenant law, and development. Throughout my year at the ±¬ÁϹ«Éç, teaching took a variety of forms. We participated in group projects, workshops, lectures, and were introduced to many Sheffield-based buildings and case-studies.

Ultimately, what sets the ±¬ÁϹ«Éç’s course apart from others, is the support you receive. The lecturers are approachable and willing to give you the support you need, whether that be to help you understand a certain concept or plan your dissertation.

Since graduating, I have started work as a Graduate Surveyor, within a commercial real estate advisory firm, and the course material prepared me for the work I am currently doing. As the course assignments mimicked real-life scenarios and reporting, I entered the workforce with a degree of confidence, that I would be able to carry out the work asked of me. This programme is also RICS accredited, meaning students can begin working towards their chartership post-graduation.

Do you have any tips for students looking to study here?

I found that I benefitted from approaching lecturers when I didn’t understand something. Don’t be afraid to ask questions or attend lecturers’ office hours!

I chose a dissertation topic that I was genuinely interested in and passionate about. I would advise others to do the same, as, personally, I find it easier to dedicate time to studying when I enjoy or care about the subject focussed upon.
